Alas, my tomato volunteers disappeared. While I was out of town our friend, the landscape specialist, performed his magic on my flower beds. He brought fresh mulch, trimmed, fed and applied preen to the beds. Of course the small tomato plant in the front bed got covered up (or pulled up). I don't know about the one growing in the gravel drive.....it is just gone. Must have gotten stepped on, anyway it is history. I knew I should have staked it/ha. I'm not complaining because this task was part of the barter system! Can't beat it.
The sunflower was partially eaten by an unknown varmint!!
Clipped off the largest two heads just clean as a whistle. Almost like scissors were used. Mystery! I don't think the plant could have supported a squirrel or coon...maybe a deer? What do you think?
Thankfully the plant survived the pruning and is just beautiful. All of the other heads are blooming.
It's like living, blooming sunshine!! Next year I want rows and rows of them!! Well maybe just a few volunteers!

I had a volunteer sunflower growing in a small planter on my front porch. (The chipmunks probably buried a seed from the bird feeder there.) I pulled it out; there wasn't enough room in the planter for sunflowers and the "authorized" geraniums.
Those sunflowers are so beautiful. And, yes, rows of them would be wonderful.
Sunflowers are so pretty... We love to go to Biltmore and see all of their sunflowers blooming in August.
Your culprit could be a rabbit. We have squirrels and raccoons ---and they don't seem to eat the blooms... Deer would probably munch out on the leaves also... AND--if you had deer, you'd notice ALOT of stuff eaten!!!!

Groundhogs will eat flowers too---but if you have them around, that may be your culprit.

Ok, dying to know - what did you think about Dallas? I was pleasantly surprised. They didn't waste any time setting the stage for lots of drama to unfold, did they?
Sorry about your sunflower-- something was really hungry, or perhaps someone just cut them and took them to their house!

Oh no! These things happen in the great outdoors. A couple of weeks ago I noticed some sunflowers a few blocks over, but by the time I walked over to get a picture of them, they had all dried up. Even sunflowers don't like 115 degree heat. :) Wishing you a great day. Tammy

I feed the birds in my backyard, Nanny, and I always get a surprise sunflower or two from seeds that falls into a flower pot and begins to grow. I love them!
That is just so weird. I wonder what did eat up that sunflower. Seems strange that the rest of the plant was not damaged. I'm so glad the rest of your gorgeous sunflowers are doing so well.
Seeing the pictures above made me speculate that you are a green thumb. Those plants are relaxing.
