The Pit

When I was in high school (many, many years ago) The Pit was "The" place for a melt in your mouth cheeseburger! Just a small building with no seating, only a drive through window and parking in the rear. The menu consisted of hamburger basket, cheeseburger basket or chicken basket. Every basket was topped with a hand full of beautiful crispy fried onion rings. Your order was brought to you when ready or you could park and go in the back door and wait. I always went in and waited on my order because I love seeing the cook get the huge dishpan from the refrigerator that was filled with sliced onions and covered in buttermilk. She would reach in for a handful, put them in the big bowl of flour, shake them off and fry in hot, hot grease.....

Last night I just had to have onion rings..
I sliced the onions early in the day and let them soak in buttermilk all day...

Had my flour ready.... lots of salt and pepper

Hot, hot grease....

Voila, melt in your mouth! Cheeseburger Baskets, topped with onion rings.
We ate the entire plate, dipped in ranch dressing!

Have a good day all!

We had a place like that in my home town. The Panther Den was in a small house close to the high school. They served the same baskets as the ones you posted about. I will always love onion rings. Thank you for the memory.

You are ALWAYS cooking stuff that looks sooooooo good! I don't know how you stay so tiny! But, I sure wish I had been there to help you eat those onion rings!!

Wow, those look good. In spite of my experience at Girl Scout camp, I still love onion rings. Can't wait to see your post. Mine took me a while.

Agreed, agreed, agreed...I want to come with Betsy the next time you cook those, and we should invite everyone else too...especially Amanda so that she doesn't lick the screen. I want Noni there for sure so she and I can come up with the solution to her question.."How in the world do you stay so skinny?"

YUM---I love onion rings --but have never made home-made ones. OH---I want some... Let me know when you cook them again and I'll be there!!!!!

We used to have a place called Carmines --where I could get 2 chili buns (no wieners) and a coke for a QUARTER..... That ages me, doesn't it???? They were so good!

Hugs,
Betsy
