Hosta

I love my hostas! If I had divided them as you should, I could have made a beautiful large bed! I intend to separate them every year and all of a sudden they have grown to a point that I hate to dig them up and risk losing them. Do you have hostas? Do you separate them? My dad and his wife started with one hosta and divided them every year and ended up with a beautiful bed that lined the fence in their backyard.

Taken from Hosta Society:

Hostas are easy to grow, shade tolerant, herbaceous perennials. Hostas are grown mainly for their beautiful foliage. Hosta leaves come in a wide range of shapes, colors, sizes, and textures. One common name for Hosta still used in some garden centers is Plantain Lily. Hostas are sometimes still referred to as Funkia. But the real name for hosta is Hosta.

Hostas are native to Japan, Korea, and China. They were first imported and grown in Europe in the late 1700’s. By the mid-1800’s hosta were growing in the United States.

Have a good day all!

I'll have to try to remember and have husband take photos of ours once they start coming up nice and thick. We have several spots, where it's almost all filled in with just hostas. After they have bloomed and the flowers have died, I cut the stalks that had the flowers on them, off. Otherwise you have to do it in the fall and believe me it keeps me busy, we have so many.

I've divided mine several time. I've done it in the spring just when they start sprouting and before they open their leaves. That way they still come up and have that nice round shape. I'm sure that point has past where you are. You can do it in the fall, too! They are pretty, aren't they? They really attract the hummingbirds in our yard. I love the ones with varigated leaves!

I just moved some hostas last weekend. We removed some trees and I knew they would roast where they were.
I tried to explain all of this to them as I was ripping them out of the ground~ I hope they don't hold a grudge!!

The front of our house faces the north so it gets only late, late afternoon sun. I have decided that I am going to plant a variety of hosta's since that is the only plant that seems to thrive in the shade.

I'm not a big hosta fan. I like bushes that flower. What hostas would you suggest to plant??

My mom has hostas, but she said they may not come up this year because the sheep got up on their back porch & ate part of them. We'll see though!
