Buyer Beware!

New technology makes me scratch my head!

Don't get me wrong, I am all about high-efficiency but this is ridiculous!

I had been warned by my daughter that her front loading, new style, no water, blah, blah, blah washer made her towels.....how shall I say it.....stink....!

Two months ago I was forced to buy new washer, dryer set.  I knew I didn't want the front loader style so opted for top loading high efficiency Whirlpool Cabrio set.

Weeks pass and I start to smell "the odor".  Yesterday I paid a visit to Lowe's to discuss the smell.  A very nice manager asked me if I was using the recommended detergent and tub cleaner...yes, I do.  Then he asked the magic question,  "Do you leave your washer door open when not in use"?  Well  No.  I wasn't told to leave the door open at all times.  After talking about my options, he offered to give me a new washer to start over with.  (once the odor is there it is very difficult to remove it)

So tomorrow they are delivering a new Whirlpool plus giving me $100 refund (new one is on sale)
Lowe's treated me more than fairly.  They have a 7 day exchange policy.

I'll let you know how leaving the door/top open works.  I just wanted you to be aware of this in case you purchase a new washer.

P.S.  You can't buy the agitator style anymore!!!  New style sprays water in and calls that a rinse!!

Oh My Gosh... Thanks for sharing this... They should tell people about leaving the door opened...

No Agitator washers anymore? GADS---I'm not sure I like that... BUT--I guess it's progress.....????

I bought a Whirlpool washer a year ago and it does not have an odor, despite keeping the lid closed. It also has an agitator in the middle. I bought it at Best Buy.

I have a friend who fixes appliances for a living and she says they really don't make ANY machines as well as they used too. Kinda scary, I think. Now I find out they stink too!

oh no...that is not good...

Gosh! I've never heard of having to keep the washer lid open. We do leave it open for a short while and then close it. How weird... I sure hope your second washer is OK.

Nanny, I hate my front loader!! I got a used pair of old style ones for the little weekender I am remodeling and I LOVE to wash my clothes there!! They just seem so much cleaner!! HATE the new 'he' things!! Amanda's stinks like that! I'm not sure why, but I've lucked out on the stench with mine so far.... just do NOT feel like they get the clothes as clean!! Soap box!! LOL! Let us know what you think of these... Craig's list... Old ones... love 'em! ;) blessings ~ t

I hate the thoughts of getting rid of my old washer and dryer. They are about 7 years old and hopefully they will last a while longer. The ones I had before these lasted 21 years and I bought them used! They just don't make them like they used to. Thanks so much for the tips. I will surely keep them in mind. Never heard of such a thing as leaving the top open though! Happy to have you stop by my place. Have a great weekend.

I've also heard that all the new gadgets on them...like the dryer steaming things fresh...just make them break down more often. Hope keeping the door open helps!

Over here, top loading machines are soooooooo expensive. The front loading are the norm, but they do mildew if you don't let them air out. And I think there is some sort of ball or something you are supposed to use once a month to clean them out. Not sure. Mine is actually mildewed around the rim, but I keep using it. Don't have a problem with smell. Companies always produce "new and improved" but it doesn't seem to be the case once you get them home. :/ Hope your weekend is great. Tammy

I simply do not like the new washers. Front loading is adding to spine/back problems in alot of people!

We had these new machines installed at my apartment building and the owner says " it saves on the water costs"

I don't like these H.E. machines. ( There outta be a law against them ) lol.

We had to buy replacement W/D pair recently. Only got 8 years out of them and even had repairs made. I know someone who had a washer for over 20 years! We recently bought a new pair at Lowe's, very nice young men delivered, set-up and removed the old pair, no extra charge! Very nice to have a business treat their customers well! You did the right thing about checking with the store and getting a replacement. Thats how a business gains customers.

Well, I'm definitely behind the world of new washers & dryers. I had no idea there were no agitators anymore. I wonder why the odor is a problem...from the basics of the machine? Leaving the door open is weird to me. Oh well...that's progress huh?

My WD are almost 15 years old so I cringe thinking that I'll have to replace them soon. Sometimes I run a empty load of hot water with bleach in it to clean out my washer, especially if someone has been sick, but that also gets rid of any odor.

wow! nice that they're giving you a new washer and a refund, too! but it would have been nice to know to 'open' the lid when not in use! good to know about the front-loader thing too. it's been a long time since i've had to buy a washer. now i'm not looking forward to that day! :)
